Square Pegs Don’t Fit Round Holes

//Square Pegs Don’t Fit Round Holes

We have all heard this saying, but how does it apply to recruiting?

Too often, when we have a staff need in our organisation, we jump straight in and place an ad on SEEK, hoping that we will spot a shining star amongst the throng of responses that we will receive. We place a GENERAL ad, hoping that the contents of someone’s resume will jump off the page at us, indicating that they are THE ONE to fill our gap.

I was always surprised at the number of business savvy employers that took very little time to assess the SPECIFICS of their actual hiring needs before they jumped right into advertising for a position.

Taking time to assess exactly what you need in a new employee is essential when hiring to fill a newly created position, but even if you are recruiting to fill an existing position that you think you understand very well, taking on a new employee provides you with an opportunity to re-assess your needs.

If you can be as SPECIFIC as possible about what you need in a new employee, including identifying what success in that role looks and feels like, and also take the time to identify the barriers that will get in the way of the new recruit achieving success in their new role, you may find that you have a square hole to fill, and so all the square pegs that you come across in the process of recruiting that you may have previously rejected as not a good match, might be just what you find yourself looking for after all.
